Visit to the Children's Hospital

This has been an incredible week for CHIMP (or at least the members that could come to the Childrens Hospital). Shweta, Alex, Sarah, and I went to the Children's Hospital this past Friday to meet the students.

I know that I can speak for the entire group when I say that it was a life changing experience which reaffirmed our devotion to the project.

We listened to the students wishes for the mural, and we will ensure that every requested object makes it on the painting. We also learned about the childrens' illnesses. It is amazing to hear what some fourth and fifth graders fight against.

We also took the penpal letters that the kids at the Children's Hospital wrote for their penpals in Lafayette.

Delay in Posting

Let me begin be apologizing for the sabbatical. I know it has been a long time since the last post, I've been very busy with CHIMP and other school projects that are demanding my time. However, I do have a significant amount of progress to note:

  • We will be working with a group of fourth and fifth graders through Project Yes at Pioneer Elementary to create the mural.
  • The mural will be donated to the Anschutz children's hospital in Denver.
  • We will be hiring an artist to sketch the mural, which will then be projected onto stretched canvas. The children at the hospital will be more or less painting by number, and the artist will do minimal touch-ups after the project is completed. This step was necessary because the Hospital was extremely concerned about the quality of a mural produced by 4th and 5th graders. The students will still be learning the importance of service and community, but we wanted to avoid creating a big brown blob.
